Diesel links with Polygiene for virus-fighting denim

Polygiene, the Swedish company that offers stay-fresh functionality for textiles, said on Thursday that it’s linked with denim brand Diesel to introduce “an ultra-innovative denim treatment that physically halts 99% of any viral activity”.

The ViralOff application — of which Diesel has a 100% exclusive for denim — “will be implemented across a selection of the brand's Spring/Summer 2021 denim styles, aiming at a greater range of products moving forward”.

The treatment also includes Odor Crunch to protect against odours from external sources.

Polygiene said the innovation is the result of its “extensive efforts in garment protection, which began with the SARS epidemic in the early 2000s”. The coronavirus pandemic has clearly provided an even bigger motivator to apply such technology to commercial products as consumers seek anti-virus solutions wherever they can be found.

Diesel now plans to apply the treatment to a selection of denim models during the final production stages.

The technology is claimed to be "always on, and has the capacity to disable over 99% of viral activity within two hours of contact between pathogens and fabric”.

It’s said to have “shown efficacy against a comprehensive range of viruses, including Covid-19”.

So how exactly does it work? Polygiene said it interacts with key proteins, inhibiting the virus from attaching to textile fibres.

This could be hugely important as stores are forced to regularly sanitise garments that have been touched, or quarantine those that have been tried on for up to 72 hours, due to potentially active coronavirus traces being attached to them.

The company also said there’s a sustainability benefit as the treatment “lasts for the lifetime of the garment, and with lower wash cycle counts, the garment life is extended, and water and energy use are reduced”
