Australian retail conglomerate Super Retail Group has promoted Anthony Heraghty to company chief executive officer, after leading the firm's outdoor business.

In an internal management move, the owner of sports retail chain Rebel Sport and automotive retailer Super Cheap Auto appointed Heraghty to the top position, following the departure of chief executive Peter Birtles in October, after 13 years in the role.

Heraghty -- who was previously head of Super Retail's outdoor business -- joined the company in 2015, and was a direct hire by Birtles to transform the firm's outdoor business.

"I can assure you that Super Retail Group is in good hands," Birtles concurred, with news of the hiring.

According to the Australian Financial Review, shareholders did not expect Heraghty to be given the company's chief position, considering the outdoor category is still the company's weakest performing division.

Earnings in outdoor have fallen more than 8 per cent since 2015, on the back of losses at camping chain Rays.

However, in the past four years, the executive has worked on repositioning Super Retail's boating, camping and fishing chain BCF, as well as Rays via the closing of poor-performing stores. Heraghty was also the initiator behind the purchase of Macpac.

Super Retail's chair Sally Pitkin backed the decision, adding that Heraghty was best placed to "lead the next era of growth for the Super Retail Group".

“Anthony is a trusted and respected leader with a track record of delivering improved business performance, coupled with an absolute commitment to and understanding of customer needs," she said.

Before Super Retail, Heragthy spent almost six years running Pacific Brands' Bonds business. Prior to Bonds, he was marketing director at Foster's Group for three years, managing director of advertising agency George Patterson Y&R for three years and managing director McCann Australia for nine years.

His appointment is effective March 31, 2019.
