Valentine's timing dents John Lewis sales but womenswear, furniture are strong

John Lewis sales dipped 2% in the week to February 11, hitting £72.97m as the calendar effect of Valentine’s Day hit sales.

Furniture was the top category at John Lewis last week

Valentine’s Day was on a Sunday last year and with 2016 being a leap year, that meant a two-day difference compared to 2017 that would have pushed some Valentine’s sales into the following week.

So if shoppers were not buying with love on their minds, what were they thinking about? Well it appears they were looking to refresh their wardrobes and homes.

The company said Fashion overall was down 2.7% on the year but womenswear grew 3.7% with SS17 pieces strong as customers looked ahead to the new season.

Sales in Home were up 0.5% with Furniture leading the charge as sales rose 8.1%. Lighting also saw strong growth, and bedding, towels and mattresses all saw sales rising last week.
